Named after Charles Michels (1903–1941), a Communist member of parliament shot by the Nazis.
The station opened in 1913 as Beaugrenelle, after the square above it. On 14 July 1945 square and station were renamed in his honour. He was taken hostage and shot during the German occupation. It is one of eight stations renamed after the war to honour members of the Resistance.
