Named after the avenue Émile-Zola, under which it lies.
The station opened in 1913 as Commerce, after the main shopping street of the old village of Grenelle. It was renamed on 1 March 1937 to tell it apart from a new Commerce station on line 8. Émile Zola (1840–1902) was the great naturalist novelist.
