Named after the rue du Château-d'Eau, after a fountain that once stood nearby.
In the early 19th century, a small square at the crossroads of the rue du Faubourg-du-Temple and the boulevard du Temple was called the place du Château-d'Eau, after its fountain. It is today's place de la République.
