Named after Corentin Cariou (1898–1942), a Communist city councillor shot by the Nazis.
The station opened in 1910 as Pont de Flandre, after a bridge over the canal Saint-Denis. It was renamed on 10 February 1946, together with the avenue above it, in memory of Cariou, who was taken hostage and shot during the occupation.
