Porte d'Auteuil

Paris 16e

Named after the porte d'Auteuil, which recalls the old village of Auteuil.

The gate, an opening in the Thiers wall, controlled the road to Boulogne. Auteuil, a parish since 1192, was split up in 1860: its centre was absorbed by Paris and its southern part by Boulogne, as the Billancourt quarter, hence the name Boulogne-Billancourt. The square at the old gate was laid out by the City of Paris and named in 1928.
