Albertgasse

Josefstadt

Named after Albertgasse, which honours Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen.

The lane was named in 1862 after Albert Kasimir of Saxe-Teschen (1738–1822), husband of Maria Theresa's daughter Marie Christine. After her death he completed the water supply she had planned, the Albertinische Wasserleitung (1804), which served high-lying suburbs such as Josefstadt. His art collection laid the foundation of the Albertina. Before 1862 the section between Josefstädter Straße and Florianigasse was called Breite Gasse.
