Lederergasse

Josefstadt

Named after the house sign of a leather merchant.

The lane was named in 1778 (in its present length in 1862) after the house of the leather wholesaler Philipp Kemeter, ‘Zur großen Haut’ – ‘At the Big Hide’ – at No. 5, which he owned from 1705 to 1739. Before that it was called Hintere or Obere Klostergasse.
