Named after the Rathaus, Vienna’s city hall.
The neo-Gothic city hall was built from 1872 to 1883 to plans by Friedrich Schmidt, after the old Rathaus in Wipplingerstraße had become too small. It is the seat of the mayor and the city council. Until 1960 it was officially called the ‘Neues Rathaus’ (new city hall), as opposed to the old one.
