Named after the Volkstheater, the ‘people’s theatre’ next to the station.
The theatre was founded by the writer Ludwig Anzengruber and the industrialist Felix Fischer and opened on 14 September 1889; its aim was to offer a broad public an alternative to the Burgtheater. Built by Fellner & Helmer, it was called Deutsches Volkstheater to distinguish it from the theatres of the monarchy’s other nationalities, and became simply Volkstheater in 1945.
