Named after the Brunnenmarkt, the market that grew up around a fountain (‘Brunnen’).
The market and Brunnengasse take their name from a fountain built in 1786, which Joseph II allowed to be fed by a water pipe from the Wienerwald; it gave the people of Neulerchenfeld drinking water. The market grew up around it from 1786, likewise approved by Joseph II. With about 160 stalls it is one of Europe's largest permanent street markets.
