Named after Gumpendorfer Straße, which recalls the old suburb of Gumpendorf.
The street was named in 1862 to recall Gumpendorf, a former suburb now part of the 6th district, Mariahilf. Earlier names included Im Saugraben, Kothgasse and Bräuhausgasse. Gumpendorf is first recorded around 1130/1140; the Old High German word ‘gump’ meant a pond, probably the pools left behind by floods of the Wien river.
