Westbahnhof

Mariahilf, Neubau, Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus

Named after the Westbahnhof, Vienna’s terminus for the line to the west.

The Westbahnhof is the starting point of the Westbahn. It opened in December 1858 with the ‘Kaiserin Elisabeth-Bahn’, the railway named after Empress Elisabeth, towards Linz. The old station was badly damaged in the Second World War and pulled down from 1949; a statue of Elisabeth from the old station now stands in the lower hall. The new hall opened in 1951.
