Named after the Gußhaus, an imperial cannon foundry.
The street was officially named on 2 January 1873 after the Gußhaus (‘casting house’), built in 1750 as the imperial cannon foundry. When cannon-making moved to the Arsenal in 1851, an art bronze foundry took over the site in 1861, and in 1869 the painter Hans Makart was given a home and studio there.
