Named after Johann Nepomuk Berger, a liberal politician and writer.
Johann Nepomuk Berger (1816–1870), born in Prostějov in Moravia, sat in the Frankfurt National Assembly in 1848–1849 with the democratic left, then became a lawyer in Vienna and in 1867–1870 a minister. The square, once Marktplatz, was named after him in 1894; it was called Lerchenfeldplatz from 1942 until 18 June 1945.
