Named after Kagran, an old village whose name is hard to explain.
The village appears around 1200 as ‘Chagaran’, then ‘Chagran’ (1340) and ‘Khagran’ (1533). Its meaning is disputed: one explanation names a 12th-century Count Chagre, but according to the City of Vienna that record does not refer to Kagran. Another explanation relates the name to Wagram, ‘edge of the Danube’s waves’. The station was called Zentrum Kagran until 1989.
