Kaisermühlen-VIC

Donaustadt

Named after Kaisermühlen, the ‘emperor’s mills’, and the Vienna International Centre.

Kaisermühlen took its name from the imperial ship mills – mills on boats – that stood on the Kaiserwasser, an arm of the Danube; it is recorded in 1674. Until 1850 the settlement was called ‘Fahnenstangen’. The Vienna International Centre, or UNO-City, was built in 1973–1979 and is rented to the United Nations for a symbolic 7 euro cents a year for 99 years.
