Named after the Donauinsel, the long artificial island in the Danube.
The Donauinsel (Danube Island) was created between 1972 and 1988, when a relief channel, the Neue Donau, was dug beside the Danube for flood protection. The land left between the two became an island about 21 kilometres long and up to 250 metres wide, now a recreation area. It was officially named on 7 May 1984; the Donauinselfest has been held here every summer since 1984.
