Named after Vorgartenstraße, the ‘front garden street’.
The street was named in 1893 (some sources say 1903) after the front gardens (‘Vorgärten’) that were laid out here, for the first time in Vienna, in front of apartment buildings, as the building regulations of 1893 required. It was built on land won by the regulation of the Danube, and most of its apartment houses are in late historicist and Secession styles.
