Praterstern

Leopoldstadt

Named after the Praterstern, the star-shaped square at the entrance to the Prater.

Emperor Joseph II had the square laid out in 1780/1781 as a new entrance to the Prater, replacing a bridge over the Fugbach stream. It is named after the seven streets that met here like a star (Stern). The name is attested from the early 19th century and became official in 1879; since the rebuilding of 1954/1955 the star shape is no longer visible.
