Named after the statue of the Virgin Mary on the bridge.
The bridge over the Donaukanal (Danube Canal) was named in 1905 and opened in 1906; a statue of Mary (Maria) by Hans Schwathe stood on its parapet at mid-span. Bridge and statue were destroyed in April 1945. The new bridge opened on 25 October 1953, and a simplified new version of the statue has stood at mid-span since 1983.
