Named after Schwedenplatz, the square that thanks Sweden for help after the First World War.
The square on the Danube Canal was named on 6 November 1919 in gratitude for Swedish aid after the First World War; the bridge beside it was renamed Schwedenbrücke at the same time, recalling Sweden’s humanitarian help for Viennese children. From 1897 the square had been Kaiser-Ferdinands-Platz, and the station opened in 1901 as Ferdinandsbrücke.
