Schottenring

Innere Stadt, Leopoldstadt

Named after the Schottenring, the part of the Ringstraße recalling the ‘Scots’ monastery.

This section of the Ringstraße was named in 1870 after the Schottentor gate and the Schottenbastei, both named after the Schottenstift. Around 1155 Heinrich II Jasomirgott brought Irish Benedictine monks from Regensburg to Vienna. Because Ireland was then called Scotia in Latin and the Irish Scoti, the Viennese came to call them ‘Schotten’ – Scots.
