Salztorbrücke

Innere Stadt

Named after the Salztor, the old ‘salt gate’ in the city wall.

Salt arriving on the Danube was brought into the city through this gate, called ‘Salztürl’ in 1428 and Salztor in 1558, and demolished in 1759. On the bridge’s site stood the Karlskettensteg footbridge (1827), then the Stephaniebrücke (1884–1886), named after Crown Princess Stephanie; it was renamed Salztorbrücke in 1919. The present bridge opened in 1961.
