Named after the City Hall square and the Burgtheater.
Rathausplatz was named in 1926, and again in 1945, after the City Hall built in 1872–1883; from 1907 it had been Dr.-Karl-Lueger-Platz, and from 1938 to 1945 it was Adolf-Hitler-Platz. The Burgtheater opened in 1748 as the ‘theatre next to the Burg’, the imperial palace, and moved into its building on the Ring in 1888.
