Named after Jakob Reumann, Vienna’s first Social Democratic mayor.
The square, called Bürgerplatz from 1872, was renamed in 1925 after Jakob Reumann (1853–1925), mayor from 1919 to 1923. A wood-turner in a meerschaum pipe factory in his youth, he founded the first trade union of his craft. With the Amalienbad baths, opened in 1926, the square became a symbol of Red Vienna.
