Named after Schloss Belvedere, Prince Eugene’s Baroque palace.
Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt built the palace for Prince Eugene of Savoy: the Lower Belvedere in 1712–1716, the Upper Belvedere in 1717–1723. It got its name – Italian for ‘beautiful view’ – from its position on a slope rising south of the old city. The Austrian State Treaty was signed in its Marble Hall on 15 May 1955.
