Named after the Seestadt Aspern, the ‘lake town’ built around an artificial lake.
The new district rises on the former Aspern airfield, opened in 1912 and in use until 1977. From 2010 the Asperner See was dug out at its centre, and this lake gives the Seestadt (‘lake town’) its name. The station itself spans the lake. By the 2030s more than 25,000 people are to live on its roughly 240 hectares.
