Named after Alfred Kowalke (1907–1944), a communist resistance fighter.
This is Friedrichsfelde’s historic village street; around 1900 it was named Wilhelmstraße and in 1976 it was renamed. Kowalke, a carpenter and KPD official, worked against the Nazis from exile and underground in Berlin. Arrested in Berlin, he was sentenced to death by the ‘People’s Court’ in 1943 and executed at Brandenburg-Görden on 6 March 1944.
