Named after Babelsberg, now part of Potsdam; the name comes from a hill.
The hill was called ‘Buberow’ in Slavic, ‘place where there are beavers’, which became Baberberg and finally Babelsberg. The station opened in 1862 as Neuendorf, later became Neuendorf-Nowawes and then Nowawes, after the colony of Bohemian weavers – Nowawes is the Bohemian translation of Neuendorf. In 1938 the Nazis replaced the Bohemian name, and the town and its station became Babelsberg.
