Named after the Barnim, the glacial plateau north-east of Berlin.
The Barnim is an Ice Age plateau and a historic landscape stretching into Brandenburg. The square was created in 1995–1996 after a competition launched by the Marzahn district office in 1993, and named in 1996. After early criticism from residents, it is now an accepted part of the neighbourhood, with markets and cultural events.
