Named after Blankenburg, a village founded around 1230.
Low German settlers, probably from the north-eastern edge of the Harz mountains, founded Blankenburg on the Barnim around 1230; the name, carried over from Blankenburg in the Harz, points to where they came from. The village church dates from around 1250. The station was first called simply Blankenburg, later Blankenburg (b Berlin).
