Gounodstraße

Weißensee

Named after Gounodstraße, which honours the French composer Charles Gounod.

Charles Gounod (1818–1893) is best known for his opera ‘Faust’. From 1875 the street was called Metzer Straße, after the siege of Metz in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. In 1951 the ‘French Quarter’ became the Komponistenviertel (‘Composers’ Quarter’), and the street was renamed after Gounod.
