Named after the Weißer See, the ‘white lake’ that probably gave Weißensee its name.
The 8.3-hectare lake formed as a dead-ice lake at the end of the last ice age. The village of Weißensee, founded around 1230 on its eastern shore, probably took its name from it; the village is first recorded in 1313 as Wittense. In the 14th century the lake was also called Großer See. Its floating fountain was installed in 1969.
