Named after Grabbeallee and Pastor-Niemöller-Platz, which meet here.
Grabbeallee, formerly Lindenstraße, was named in 1936, 100 years after the death of the dramatist Christian Dietrich Grabbe (1801–1836). The square was Bismarckplatz from 1899 and Kurt-Fischer-Platz, after a GDR police chief, from 1951. In 1992 it was named after Martin Niemöller (1892–1984), a Protestant pastor of the Confessing Church who resisted Nazi control of the church; in 1938 he was sent to Sachsenhausen concentration camp.
