Schöneweide

Niederschöneweide

‘Schöneweide’ means ‘beautiful meadow’, after a meadow on the bank of the Spree.

The name ‘Schöne Weyde’ is first recorded in 1598, for a wide meadow on the left bank of the Spree, in what is now Niederschöneweide. The station opened in May 1868 as ‘Neuer Krug’, after a nearby inn – a sign of its role for day-trippers. It later carried the names of Johannisthal and Niederschöneweide, and has been called simply Schöneweide since 1929.
