‘Baumschulenweg’ means ‘tree-nursery road’, after the famous Späth nursery.
In 1863 Franz Ludwig Späth moved his nursery (Baumschule) here and built it into the largest in the world. The Ablageweg, the road leading to it, was also known as Baumschulenweg, and the halt opened there in 1890 took that name when it was expanded into a suburban station in 1902–1906. The postal service, the railway and Späth then made Baumschulenweg the official name of the whole place.
