Named after Sophie Charlotte, the first Prussian queen.
Sophie Charlotte of Hanover (1668–1705) was the wife of Elector Friedrich III and, from 1701, the first Prussian queen. She had Schloss Lietzenburg built and made it her home, receiving guests such as the philosopher Leibniz. After her death the king renamed it Charlottenburg in her honour – a name later taken by the town. The square was laid out in 1892.
