Unter den Linden

Mitte

Named after Unter den Linden, the boulevard ‘under the lime trees’.

The street began in 1573 as a bridle path from the Stadtschloss (city palace) to the Tiergarten. In 1647, under Elector Friedrich Wilhelm, it was turned into an avenue planted with lime trees (Linden). The station, opened on 4 December 2020, lies where the boulevard crosses Friedrichstraße. Until 2009 the name Unter den Linden belonged to the S-Bahn station now called Brandenburger Tor.
