Brandenburger Tor

Mitte

Named after the Brandenburger Tor (Brandenburg Gate).

The gate was built in 1789–1793 for King Friedrich Wilhelm II to designs by Carl Gotthard Langhans; an earlier gate on the spot stood on the road to Brandenburg an der Havel. The S-Bahn station opened in 1936 as Unter den Linden. From 1961 to 1990, under the Wall, no trains stopped here. It took the name Brandenburger Tor in 2009, because a new U-Bahn station called Unter den Linden was planned elsewhere.
