Weberwiese

Friedrichshain

Named after the Weberwiese, a green once used by dyers and weavers.

The name, ‘weavers' meadow’, recalls the lawn outside the old city gate where dyers and weavers bleached their cloth; it was used unofficially before the First World War. The station opened on 21 December 1930 as Memeler Straße, after the city of Memel (now Klaipėda). In 1950 it became Marchlewskistraße, after the Polish politician Julian Marchlewski, and in 1992 Weberwiese.
