Named after Clapham Common, once common land for two parishes.
'Clapham' comes from Old English and means a homestead or enclosure near a hill; it is first recorded as Cloppaham around 880. Another idea is a former landowner called something like Cloppa. The common belonged to the parishes of Battersea and Clapham and was turned into a park under the Metropolitan Commons Act 1878.
