Named after the island of Cyprus, which came under British control in 1878.
The area takes its name from the Cyprus Estate, housing for workers at the nearby Royal Albert Dock, named to commemorate Britain's acquisition of the island. Cyprus has been an independent republic since 1960, but the name stuck. Very little remains of this Victorian community except the name.
