Gloucester Road

Kensington and Chelsea

Named after Maria, Duchess of Gloucester and Edinburgh, who built a house here by 1805.

Her house was Gloucester Lodge. Before that the road was Hog Moore Lane, recorded in 1612: the ‘lane through marshy ground where hogs are kept’, a name still used until about 1850. The station opened in 1868 as Brompton (Gloucester Road); ‘Brompton’ was dropped in 1907.
