Named after Hackney Downs, an old common nearby.
The common was kept as parkland from the 1860s, after pressure from the Commons Preservation Society. In the 18th century Hackney was thought to have given its name to the hackney horse, but the place-name is older than the Norman Conquest and unrelated. The station was called Hackney Downs Junction until 1896.
