Tower Hill

Tower Hamlets

Named after the hill beside the Tower of London.

The name was first recorded as Tourhulle in 1343; earlier British legends call the place White Hill. Great Tower Hill lies inside the line of the London Wall, Little Tower Hill outside it. The station opened in 1884 as Mark Lane, after the street, and was renamed Tower Hill in 1946; the present station replaced it in 1967.
