'Watford' may mean the wet ford, or the ford used for hunting.
The name may come from Old English waet, full of water, as the area was marshy, or wath, hunting. It was first recorded as Watforda in a charter of 1007. The ford crossed the River Colne on an ancient trackway, and the High Street follows part of its line.
