Cyprien Merjai

Beggen

Named after Cyprien Merjai (1760–1822), Luxembourg traveller and chronicler.

Born in Luxembourg City, Merjai took a law degree at Leuven in 1786 but never showed interest in using it. He travelled through Belgium, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and England, and from 1805 wrote ‘Voyages curieux et utiles’, a 25-volume manuscript. Its detailed descriptions of Luxembourg’s towns and monuments have been of great service to historians. He died in his house in Pfaffenthal.
