Bonnevoie’s central square, Place Léon XIII, honours Pope Leo XIII (1810–1903).
Leo XIII was pope from 1878 to 1903. His 1891 encyclical ‘Rerum novarum’ defended workers’ rights to a fair wage, safe working conditions and trade unions. The square lines up with the nave of Bonnevoie Church and was rebuilt with fountains, benches and trees in works finished in 2002.
