Sidney Gilchrist Thomas (1850–1885), inventor.
His 1879 process, developed with his cousin Percy Gilchrist, made it possible to turn phosphorus-rich iron ore, called 'minette', into steel. The Metz brothers bought the licence and first used it at their works in Eich, then built a new works in Dudelange that used only this process. It helped start Luxembourg's steel boom.
