Named after 111th Street in Richmond Hill, formerly Greenwood Avenue.
When the elevated line was extended into Richmond Hill on 28 May 1917, it reached Greenwood Avenue, now 111th Street. An old street list also gives the name Cherry Street. Richmond Hill itself was named either after Richmond, a suburban town near London, or after Edward Richmond, the landscape architect hired in 1868 to lay out the community.
